Changes in arrangeents for Parish mass times

Published Mon, 29/10/2018 by

Dear Parishioners,
As you may already be aware, the Bishop has asked me to take on pastoral responsibility for the Parish of Ripley from November this year. This will follow the retirement of Fr Keogh at the end of October, and will be in addition to my continuing to be your priest in the Parish of Belper & Duffield. This development has been foreseen for some time. Inevitable it will involve some changes. I am writing this letter to keep you informed.

(1) Sunday Mass times

Following a recent consultation to determine the best future Mass times once the parishes of Ripley and Belper with Duffield are clustered together, the following arrangements have been agreed. These times will apply from the weekend of the 3rd and 4th November 2018 onwards:

Saturday evening: 6pm Vigil Mass at St Margaret Clitherow’s, Duffield
Sunday morning: 9am St Joseph’s, Ripley
Sunday morning: 11am Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Belper

(2) Location of churches

The locations of all these churches are available to view on our Parish website ( It is hoped a number of small maps will also be available towards the end of October at the back of church for the benefit those who do not have access to the internet. The addresses and post codes are:
Our Lady’s – Gibfield Lane, Belper DE56 1WA
St Margaret Clitherow’s – Hall Farm Road, Duffield DE56 4FS
St Joseph’s – Butterley Hill, Ripley DE5 3LW

(3) Pattern of mid-week Masses

The regular pattern for 9.30am weekday Masses will in future be:
Tuesday – Duffield, Wednesday – Belper, Thursday – Ripley, Friday – Belper.
To avoid disappointment it is advisable to check in advance on the website or Parish bulletin regarding any particular weekday as variations on this pattern do arise at certain times.
My regular day off will continue to be a Monday.

(4) Holy Days of Obligation; All Saints Day and All Souls

On Holy Days of Obligation which fall midweek in term time, the regular pattern will be:
7.30pm – Vigil Mass, the evening before the Holy Day
9.30am – Mass on the Holy Day
2pm – Mass at St Elizabeth’s School on the Holy Day
The aim over time is to alternate the 7.30pm and 9.30am Masses between Our Lady’s and St Joseph’s. So, again, please check the website or bulletin the week before to see what the arrangement is going to be for a given Holy Day. It will also be announced on the preceding Sunday.
Thursday 1st November, All Saints’ Day, the next Holy Day of Obligation, falls during a school holiday. So on this occasion both Masses can be celebrated on the Holy Day, 1st November – at 9.30am at St Joseph’s, and at 7.30pm at Our Lady’s.
On Friday 2nd November, All Souls’ Day, a Mass will be celebrated at 11am at St Margaret Clitherow’s in Duffield. This year prayers will be said for the repose of the faithful departed in Ripley Cemetery on Sunday 4th November at 3pm. Prayer aids and holy water will be available for those who wish to pray for the souls of the faithful departed elsewhere.

(5) Christmas 2018 – arrangements for Belper and Duffield

At Christmas the following popular times for Mass at Belper and Duffield will be continue:
Christmas Eve: Mass during the Night 9.30pm – Our Lady’s, Belper
Christmas Day: Mass at Dawn 8.30am – St Margaret’s, Duffield
Mass during the Day 10am – Our Lady’s, Belper
1st January: Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God 10am – Our Lady’s, Belper

(6) Finally…

Thank you to those many parishioners who give generously of their time and talents to make the parish at Belper and Duffield such a vibrant, interesting and faith-filled community. It is a privilege to continue to be your Parish Priest. I believe our new links with Ripley will develop and bear fruit over time, enabling us to share our spiritual gifts in a mutually enriching manner.

Wishing you and your nearest and dearest every blessing,
Yours sincerely,
Michael Kirkham
