Leisure Group

We are a group of people aged from 55-100 from Belper & Duffield. We are very active and enjoy our fortnightly get-togethers. We don’t regard ourselves as O.A.P’s hence the name “Leisure Group” and our aim is to promote “Togetherness in Faith”.

The group was started 30 years ago by Marie Francis and met on Thursdays at St Elizabeth’s Convent, Matlock Road. The meetings nowadays are still held on Thursdays but could either be at the Church House, Belper or St Margaret’s, Duffield from 2pm. At these meetings we have a chat over a ‘cuppa and cake’ and also make arrangements for future events i.e. a quiz or bingo session, speakers to visit – and venues for lunches out. We all enjoy a meal out visiting Restaurants, Pubs, Garden Centres and even St Elizabeth’s school – and Sudbury Prison – sampling a variety of cuisine. On these days we meet earlier.

We also have meals ‘in house’ at St Margaret’s in Duffield – in Lent and again in November, both these meals are preceded by Mass. The Mass in November is to remember our deceased members. We also have a special Christmas dinner party also at St Margaret’s in early December.

From time to time at our meetings we have raised money for various charities or events e.g. Trips to Lourdes, Hope for Belper, Church House repairs etc. Generally we just enjoy the time spent together, having fun and laughter as well as raising funds when needed.

There are a number books of photos taken over the years, of our members enjoying themselves at various events. These prove to be a great source of amusement.

New Members are always welcome. Details of the meetings are on the weekly Church bulletin or contact Barbara Wareing or any member of the Leisure Group who will be only too glad to tell you about us.
